If you have receding gums and are self-conscious about your smile, Dr. Kaz Zymantas may recommend a gum grafting procedure to restore your gum line and improve your overall oral health. Patients often wonder, does gum surgery hurt? And, how will it improve my smile? Dr. Zymantas can answer these and other questions you may have about receding gums treatment options during your consultation.
Dr. Zymantas will provide anesthetic to make you comfortable during your grafting procedure. There are several techniques used to perform gum grafting procedures that provide optimal results. Dr. Zymantas will determine which type of graft is suitable for you based on your situation and needs. The three types are:
• Connective Tissue Grafts – These are the most common form of gum grafts used to treat root exposure around one or several teeth. Dr. Zymantas will cut a flap of skin from the roof of your mouth to remove some tissue from under the flap. Once the flap is sutured back down, the grafted tissue will then be secured to the gum tissue around the exposed root. As the gums heal, the attached tissue will create a more attractive gum line around the tooth.
• Free Gingival Grafts – These are similar to the connective tissue graft except that a small amount of tissue is taken from the roof of the mouth instead of from tissue removed underneath the flap. This grafted tissue is attached directly to the gum area and can be a better match for those who have naturally thin gums.
• Pedicle Grafts – With this type of graft, the gum tissue is used from the area surrounding the tooth that needs to be repaired. A small flap (pedicle) is cut away so that one side remains attached and then the flap is pulled up or down to cover the exposed root before being sutured securely in place. This can be a good match for patients that have plenty of gum tissue near a tooth that needs to be treated.
