Straightening your teeth doesn’t have to mean metal braces. Invisalign is giving teens and adults a comfortable, confident way to update their smiles – on their own terms.
If you or your teenager has held back from moving forward with a straight smile, you owe it yourself to learn more about your treatment options. Don’t resign yourself to crooked teeth for the rest of your life. The first step is a complimentary consultation with Dr. Zymantas. You have nothing to lose, and so much to gain.
Invisalign is an alternative orthodontic system consisting of clear plastic aligners. Both teens and adults are eligible Invisalign candidates, but their individual treatment cases will determine whether it’s the best choice for straightening teeth. The patient progresses through a series of trays. These trays are precisely crafted to guide the teeth into straighter, healthier positions. They apply gentle resistance to the teeth to move them into their target positions, one step at a time.
The trays can be removed for eating, brushing and flossing to simplify the treatment process for patients. And since the aligners are clear, the patient’s smile shows through at all times. There’s no bulky metal mouth to contend with – just smooth, clear aligners that blend in with your grin.
How can you tell whether you’re an Invisalign candidate? You will need to schedule a complimentary consultation to get a definitive answer. A dentist or orthodontist needs to evaluate your teeth and take diagnostic x-rays to determine the ideal treatment option. In general, patients with mild to moderate malocclusion can benefit from Invisalign. More serious issues will need to be resolved with metal braces or oral surgery.
Don’t write off Invisalign until you’ve met with Dr. Zymantas and learned more about your personal candidacy!
Invisalign trays are crafted using 3D graphics that illustrate the movement of your teeth. The resulting aligners move your teeth in steps, with each tray having a slightly different shape. Each aligner is crucial in getting you to the final goal of a straight, healthy smile. Each patient can require anywhere from 12-48 aligners to complete the treatment process, and wears each aligner for 1-2 weeks. The aligners need to be worn for 20-22 hours per day to keep the treatment plan on schedule.
Teeth move slowly but surely, with the patient able to see their smile through their aligners along the way.
Invisalign Teen is similar to standard Invisalign treatment, with a few additional features to help assist younger patients.
What teens love most about Invisalign is the opportunity to straighten their teeth without having to be self-conscious or uncomfortable – no matter whether they’re at school, playing sports or hanging out with friends. Patients also don’t need to restrict their diet or activities as the removable aligners allow them to eat all their favorite foods. Brushing and flossing are simple and not hampered by brackets and wires.
If your teenager’s dentist or orthodontist has recommended braces, schedule an Invisalign consultation to learn whether it could be a feasible treatment option.
You should rinse your aligners every night, and carefully brush them with your toothbrush. This keeps the aligners clean of bacteria. There is also an Invisalign cleaning system available for an additional hygiene boost.
Remove your aligners while eating, or drinking anything other than water. Drinking beverages like tea, coffee or wine while wearing aligners will stain them over time. The last thing you want is for your clear aligner to have a brown or red tinge – that defeats the purpose! Whenever you’ve taken out your aligners to eat, make sure to store them in their case. If you wrap them in a napkin or tuck them away under your plate, it’s much more likely that they will be accidentally thrown away or left behind.
The most important thing to remember is to replace your aligners as quickly as possible after eating, drinking, brushing or flossing. Because you need to wear them 20-22 hours per day (which is longer than it sounds), quick replacement is key.
Invisalign treatment does not restrict your diet. You can continue to enjoy your regular snacks and meals, and won’t need to worry about breaking off brackets or pulling out wires.
There is one consideration to keep in mind. Cavities are more of a risk during Invisalign because aligners can trap bacteria against your teeth. For this reason, eating healthy and avoiding sugary foods can help you prevent decay. You should also be sure to brush your teeth after eating and before replacing your aligners. This will help you reset to a clean mouth before your aligners are back on your teeth.
You will need to wear your aligners most of each day and night – 20-22 hours (the longer you’re wearing them, the better). You will receive a set of trays at each appointment with your provider, along with instructions as to the dates when you should switch out aligners. There will be some initial discomfort after beginning to wear a new set of aligners, but this will quickly fade.
Each patient visits their Invisalign provider on their own schedule, with appointments typically taking place every 6-8 weeks. Patients appreciate that they don’t need to visit as often as they do with metal braces.
Treatment length is different for everyone, and your dentist will give you an estimate at the beginning of your Invisalign process. Most patients complete Invisalign in 1-2 years. Remember to wear your aligners 20-22 hours per day to stay on track and complete treatment in the estimated amount of time!
A lifelong straight smile is always the goal. While you will not need Invisalign trays any longer after you finish your treatment process, there will still be some maintenance necessary, just as there is after metal braces. You will wear a retainer to help preserve your new smile and ensure it lasts.
